peanut cactus
description

*Peanut Cactus – _Echinopsis chamaecereus_ aka _Chamaecereus silvestrii*_

This little guy gets its name from the peanut-shaped stems it grows in clumps. Super popular because it’s cute, easy, and blooms like crazy when happy
Argentina
- *Size*: Compact, clumping cactus with finger-like stems. Each “finger” is about 1-6 inches long

*Care guide*

*1. Light* ☀️
Needs 6+ hours of bright light daily. Indoors = sunniest window. Outdoors = full sun to partial shade. In super hot areas like AZ, give it afternoon shade to avoid scorching. If stems get long/skinny = not enough light.

*2. Water* 💧
This is where most people go wrong. It’s drought-tolerant and hates wet feet.
- *Spring/Summer growing season*: Soak & dry method. Water deeply, then let soil dry completely. Every 2-3 weeks usually
- *Fall/Winter dormancy*: Barely water. Once a month or less. If temps are <40°F/5°C, stop watering completely
- *Key*: Always let it dry out. Overwatering = root rot

*3. Soil*
Must be gritty and fast-draining. Use cactus mix, or make your own: 1 part potting soil + 1 part perlite/pumice + 1 part coarse sand. Shallow, wide pots work best since roots are shallow.

*4. Temperature*
- *Growing*: 60-80°F / 15-25°C
- *Winter dormancy*: Needs cool temps 50-60°F / 10-15°C to set flower buds. That cool + dry rest is the secret to blooms

*5. Fertilizer*
They’re not heavy feeders. If you do feed: low nitrogen, higher phosphorus/potassium to encourage flowers. Example: 2-7-7 or 4-10-10, diluted to ¼-½ strength. Only in spring/summer, 1-2x total.

*6. Flowers* 🌺
Bright orange-red to red blooms in late spring/early summer. To get it to bloom: lots of sun + cool dry winter + low-nitrogen fertilizer in spring.
*Propagation* ✂️
1. Twist off a “pup” or cut a stem
2. Let it callous/dry 1-2 days
3. Stick in dry cactus soil. Water sparingly after 2-4 weeks
